Mission Statement

Mission: To assist University of Oregon postdoctoral researchers by providing resources for:

  • career development

  • work-life integration

  • postdocs in transition

  • international postdocs

Benefits to Postdoctoral researchers: The UOPA will provide many resources to postdocs (PRs), including, but not restricted, to the following:

1.    Career development:

  • Funding resources, including where to apply for grants, review of grants in progress, etc.

  • Job resources, including where to find job listings, how to put together a successful application, and feedback on CVs, research proposals and job talks

2.    Work-life integration:

  • Information for parents about daycare and maternity leave.

  • Provide opportunities for PRs to meet colleagues from other departments

3.    Transitional resources:

  • Basic introduction to the University of Oregon and Eugene, including housing, parking, applying for Duck ID, etc.

  • Basic information on how to leave the University, including how to organize lab work, moving information, etc.

4.    International postdoc concerns:

  • Provide information regarding how to transition to the University of Oregon, including administrative steps such as application for social security number, contacting the international office, bank account, etc.

  • Provide information about how to apply for visas

Benefits to the University: An official postdoc association will provide many benefits not only to PRs, but to the University of Oregon as well.

1.    Funding:

  • UOPA will provide resources and support for PRs in identifying, writing, and submitting grants to both federal and private funding foundations. An increase in third-party funding for PRs will decrease required financial support from the University of Oregon.

  • Training grant applications (e.g. K99/R00) will be strengthened by the presence of university support for PRs.

  • Increased success rate for PR funding will influence recruitment of new faculty members and PRs

2.    Recruitment of new faculty:

  • The University of Oregon will be able to show potential faculty recruits that PRs will have support from the UOPA.

3.    Recruitment of new PRs:

  • Potential PRs will have support for transitioning to the University of Oregon, grant writing, and career development.

4.    University of Oregon reputation:

  • A UOPA will produce researchers that will be better equipped for successfully applying to tenure track positions at other Universities, which will reflect positively on the University of Oregon.

5.    Wide audience:

  • In the future, we will invite speakers from outside the University to speak on topics ranging from funding sources to job resources. These speakers will benefit grad students and faculty.
